Moon Rocket Blanco by Jade Gross, a white wine from the vintage 2023 made by multifaceted Jade in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a township adhered to the Rioja Denominacion de Origen Calificada.
This wine is made from a blend of four white grape varieties typical of Rioja: Viura, Tempranillo Blanco, Garnacha Blanca and Malvasía.
The Tempranillo Blanco, from a young vineyard planted on iron-rich clay soil from the Alto de Najerilla valley, lends the wine a fruity character. The Malvasía comes from a high-altitude vineyard in Rivas de Tereso, adding freshness. The Viura and Garnacha Blanca, planted on clay-limestone soils around Labastida, bring mellowness, depth and minerality to the wine.
The grapes were harvested by hand, with each variety picked separately according to its ripeness in its respective vineyard plot. After gentle pressing, the must from each variety was fermented separately in 500-litre French oak barrels, before being left to rest on the lees for six months.
Although it may seem to be the same wine as the well-known Chiguita, it actually contains different proportions of grapes, and the barrels have different levels of toasting, which gives it a different character and thus makes it a distinct wine.
In addition, of this third edition of the 2025 vintage only 150 individually numbered Magnum bottles (1500 ml) have been bottled. The label, as usual for all the wines, is created by the San Sebastian illustrator Javier Aramburu and inspired by the adventures of Tintin and his trip to the moon. The rocket in the shape of the magnum bottle and Jade herself in a space suit are not to be missed, and the label deserves to be preserved as a small work of art!
