Hirsch Ried Gaisberg Zöbing Riesling 2020 comes from Ried Gaisberg 1ÖTW, one of the leading vineyards in Zöbing, Kamptal DAC, Austria. The southwest-facing site lies on the southern foothills of the Manhartsberg and is rooted mainly in weathered mica schist, with sandy, slightly silty soils and a significant amount of gravel and stone. Local amphibolite lenses and remnants of loess add further geological complexity.
The grapes were harvested in October and whole-bunch pressed. Fermentation took place exclusively with indigenous yeasts, followed by ageing on the fine lees until mid-May in a combination of stainless steel tanks and large oak casks. The wine comes from certified biodynamically farmed vineyards under the Respekt standard.
The 2020 vintage delivers a Riesling of remarkable precision and energy, showing aromas of lime zest, yellow tropical fruit, passion fruit, mango and delicate floral notes. The palate is taut, saline and deeply mineral, with vibrant acidity and a long citrus-driven finish. A single-vineyard Riesling with excellent ageing potential, particularly suited to fine-dining wine lists looking for distinctive Austrian terroir wines. The vintage received 96 points from James Suckling and 95 from Falstaff magazine.
