Rayco Fernandez and his team in Lanzarote launched the Puro Rofe project in 2017 and surprised the Canarian wine scene with their single-varietal and single-vineyard wines.
Made from ‘Malvasía Volcánica’ grapes, grown on the slopes of Mount Tinasoria (a former volcano), between the municipalities of La Geria and Masdache. The century-old vines are grown in traditional pits at around 500 metres above sea level – almost the highest vines on the island – and are harvested in early August. The wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation, is neither filtered nor fined, and has minimal sulphur added.
The must ferments in a used 500-litre barrel, where it is left to rest for around 8–9 months before bottling. Just 600 bottles!
Our impressions: this wine transports you to the vineyards surrounded by these volcanic sands, with notes of matchstick and crushed rocks, but also with a generous fruit profile including citrus and pineapple, with a subtle creamy note. On the palate, it is very fresh and well-balanced with citrus acidity; it is light, elegant and has a long finish.
A wine that truly reflects its origin! Ready to enjoy now or to be cellared for a while.
