Rayco Fernandez and his team in Lanzarote launched the Puro Rofe project in 2017 and surprised the Canarian wine scene with their single-varietal and single-vineyard wines.

This Rofe, or simply its white wine, is made from the typical grape varieties of Lanzarote: Malvasía Volcánica, Diega and Listán Blanco.

For this wine, the grapes are grown in different areas of the island, in the characteristic pits dug into the volcanic sand (rofe), and on other flatter plots using the traditional sand-covering method; in short, on different soils (calcareous, clayey) but always covered with volcanic sand. The grapes are harvested from late July to mid-August, and the wine is produced in different ways depending on the plot and the vintage. The grapes are trodden by foot, after which the must ferments in traditional wine presses. The wine rests on its lees for 8 months in stainless steel tanks.

The wine is neither filtered nor clarified, and only a very small amount of sulphur dioxide is added to preserve it.

Our impressions: the wine transports you to the vineyards surrounded by these volcanic sands, with notes of ash and crushed rocks, but also with a good fruitiness (mainly yellow fruit, such as pear, apple and peach). On the palate, it is fresh and pleasant to drink – it has none of the ‘volcanic’ reduction notes often attributed to Canarian wines.

A wine that truly reflects its origin and vintage! Ready to enjoy now or to be kept in the cellar for a while.
