Rayco Fernandez and his team in Lanzarote launched the Puro Rofe project in 2017 and surprised the Canarian wine scene with their single-varietal and single-vineyard wines.

Made primarily from Listán Blanco and Listán Negro, with Malvasía Volcánica and Diego, grown on a plot in the municipality of Masdache, from which the wine takes its name. The century-old vines are grown in traditional pits at around 300 metres above sea level by Ascensión Robayna (several Puro Rofe wines are made from her grapes), harvested in early August to allow the Diego and Listán Negro to ripen fully.

Spontaneous fermentation of all the varieties together (field blend); the wine is neither filtered nor clarified, and only minimal amounts of sulphur dioxide are added.

The must ferments in second-use 500-litre barrels and stainless steel tanks, where it is left to rest for around 8–9 months before bottling. Just 1,500 bottles.

Our impressions: from the first pour it looks more like a rosé due to its pale pink gold hue, with notes of ripe fruit like peach, red apple, banana, with some citrus notes like mandarin. On the palate, it has a creamy texture with good acidity, well-balanced, and a fairly long finish. An unconventional Canarian white wine!

A wine that truly reflects its origin and vintage! Ready to enjoy now or to be cellared for a while.
