Rayco Fernandez and his team in Lanzarote launched the Puro Rofe project in 2017 and surprised the Canarian wine scene with their single-varietal and single-vineyard wines.

Made primarily from Malvasía Volcánica, with small amounts of Listán Blanco and Diego, grown in the area of the ancient volcano in the Juan Bello region, from which the wine takes its name. The centenary vines are cultivated in traditional pits at around 350 asl, by Ascensión Robayna (several Puro Rofe wines are made from her grapes), harvested in late July; the wine undergoes spontaneous fermentation, is neither filtered nor fined, and minimal amounts of sulphur dioxide are added.

The must ferments in used 500-litre barrels, where it is left to rest for around 8–9 months before bottling.

Our impressions: the wine transports you to the vineyards surrounded by these volcanic sands, with subtle notes of ground stone, but it also clearly reveals the volcanic Malvasía character – pronounced citrus notes, such as lemon and lime, green fruit such as pear and apple, some herbaceous notes and hints of tropical fruit such as pineapple. On the palate, it’s a real treat: refreshing acidity, well-balanced and with a creamy texture, and a fairly long finish. A delightful Canarian white wine!

A wine that truly reflects its origin and vintage! Ready to enjoy now or to be cellared for a while.
