Jable de Tao, a winery that has revolutionised the Lanzarote wine scene by presenting its first vintage, the 2022, and 4 very different white wines. Jable is the name given to volcanic sand, these tiny black rocks, smaller than the so-called ‘rofe’, which abound in the Canary Islands.

The maker of these wine marvels is Carmelo Peña, known for his own project in Gran Canaria (Bien de Altura), but with extensive previous experience in winemaking in Lanzarote.

The first label comes with no surname, simply Jable de Tao, which is a mixture of varieties, soils and plots: Malvasía Volcánica, Listán Blanco, Diego, Listán Negro (made as a white wine by separating the skins as soon as the grapes are pressed), grown on soils covered with both volcanic sand (jable) and small rocks (rofe). Vines of different ages, from the youngest ones of about 50 years old to the oldest ones of about 200 years old. The musts ferment in different elements: cement tanks, foudres and new 500-litre barrels, where the wines then spend a short ageing period before being blended. This confers an unmistakable freshness and at the same time an unexpected additional complexity.

Jable de Tao is the gateway to get to know this project, and also a wine with a larger production of around 11,000 bottles.

Our sensations: citrus on the nose, with notes ranging from herbaceous to floral, with a spicy touch of white pepper, cream, and also aromas of broken stone. On the palate it has a vibrant acidity wrapped in creamy sensations (reminiscent of a citrus cream), balanced and with a lingering finish.
