Jable de Tao, a winery that has revolutionised the Lanzarote wine scene by presenting its first vintage, the 2022, and 4 very different white wines. Jable is the name given to volcanic sand, these tiny black rocks, smaller than the so-called ‘rofe’, which abound in the Canary Islands.
The maker of these wine marvels is Carmelo Peña, known for his own project in Gran Canaria (Bien de Altura), but with extensive previous experience in winemaking in Lanzarote.
Chupadero is the name of the vineyard located in La Geria, in an ancient volcano crater. The plantation method is in "hoyos" (or "holes"), manual excavations up to 5 metres deep and 15 metres in diameter, which are necessary to protect the vines from the strong Alisio winds and to reach the fertile soil which is covered by volcanic sand (eroded stone, rofe) and other minerals rich in different compositions of metals such as iron and magnesium.
Listán Blanco is not the most widely planted variety on Lanzarote, but this old vineyard in a unique location requires special care. This wine ferments in a concrete egg, where it will also be left for 12 months to refine on its lees.
Very limited production of 800 bottles.
Our sensations: on the nose it has powerful aromas that we could define as ‘volcanic’ - sulphur, crushed stone, embers, smoke, with a citrus background, and other more exotic notes such as grilled pineapple, popcorn with salted caramel. In the mouth it is very fluid, with a marked acidity, but elegant, light-bodied (only 11º abv.), with a persistent finish with the same notes of the nose.
A unique experience to taste the expression of volcanic origin!
