Jable de Tao, a winery that has revolutionised the Lanzarote wine scene by presenting its second vintage, the 2023, and several very different white wines. Jable is the name given to volcanic sand, these tiny black rocks, smaller than the so-called ‘rofe’, which abound in the Canary Islands.

The maker of these wine marvels is Carmelo Peña, known for his own project in Gran Canaria (Bien de Altura), but with extensive previous experience in winemaking in Lanzarote.

El Jable de Tao Tinto is a new release of this first vintage 2022, made from Listán Negro, which, like its white brother, comes from different plots throughout the island. The vines are always old, between 100 and 150 years old.

This wine is fermented in ceramic amphorae, using approximately 50% of whole bunches (with stems), for a slow and long fermentation (up to 30 days). The wine is then refined for 22 months in the same amphorae and in an Italian foudre.

Limited production of 2.600 bottles.

Our impressions: a perfect red wine for hot days, it can be drunk slightly cool, it is juicy and has notes of crunchy red fruits, hints of forest and floral notes. Its tannin is marked but polished with these almost two years of ageing, which makes it more velvety, and medium-bodied with its barely 11º of alcohol. A very unique wine that every Canarian wine lover should try!
