Moon Rocket Blanco by Jade Gross, a white wine from the vintage 2023 made by multifaceted Jade with the help of the famous Riojan winemaker Abel Mendoza, in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, a township adhered to the Rioja Denominacion de Origen Calificada.
This vintage is the first for wine to be made of a blend of 4 white grape varieties that are typical in Rioja: Viura (also known as Macabeo in other areas in Spain), Tempranillo Blanco (which is a white mutation of the famous red grape Tempranillo), Garnacha Blanca (or Grenache Blanc - yet another mutation of the original Spanish red Garnacha) and finally Malvasia.
Tempranillo Blanco and Garnacha Blanca are planted on a clay-ferrous soil and come from the Alto de Najerilla valley. Viura is planted on calcarous clay soil and comes from Labastida and San Vicente de la Sonsierra towns' areas. And Malvasia comes from old vines plantation in Laguardia.
The grapes were hand harvested on September 12-14, 2024. The juice after direct whole bunch press fermented in French oak barrels and the resulting wine was aged for further 6 months in the barrels on its fine lees.
Although it seems to be the same wine as the well-known Chiguita, in reality it has different proportions of grapes, which gives it a different character.
In addition, this second edition of the 2024 vintage only 60 individually numbered Magnum bottles (1500 ml) have been bottled. The label, as usual for all the wines, is created by the San Sebastian illustrator Javier Aramburu and inspired by the adventures of Tintin and his trip to the moon. The rocket in the shape of the magnum bottle and Jade herself in a space suit are not to be missed, and the label deserves to be preserved as a small work of art!
