Petit Clergeot Champagne is the personal project of Paul-Bastien Clergeot, a young winemaker from Polisot in the Côte des Bar, who in 2017 decided to transform the family’s vineyards into a small-scale production of single-vineyard Champagne.
His philosophy can be summed up as ‘one plot, one grape variety, one vintage’: to produce precise and distinctive wines that express the terroir rather than the style of a maison, working organically and with minimal intervention.
Petit Clergeot Haut Revers du Chûtat 2022 is a 100% Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs Champagne from Montgueux, one of the most distinctive terroirs in southern Champagne. The Haut Revers du Chûtat vineyard planted in 1986 is characterised by chalk and flinty soils, a key element behind the wine's mineral character, freshness and precision.
The 2022 vintage is released as a Brut Nature, with no dosage, preserving the wine's purity and natural tension. The grapes were harvested on 7 September; the must ferments in amphorae and stainless-steel tanks, and the second fermentation then lasts for almost two years before disgorging. The approach is based on minimal intervention and a clear expression of the vineyard and grape variety, reflecting Paul-Bastien Clergeot's philosophy of working plot by plot, grape variety by grape variety and vintage by vintage.
The wine stands out for its freshness, precision and pronounced mineral character, with a structure reminiscent of the great chalk-driven white wines of Champagne. A small-grower Blanc de Blancs that is dry, energetic and highly gastronomic, particularly suited to oysters, seafood, fish and ingredient-driven cuisine.
