José Gil, together with his partner Vicky Fernández, started the Jose Gil Vigneron project in 2016, but despite his youth, he has a long career as a winemaker both in a family winery in La Rioja and staging in Germany and Burgundy, which is the origin of the concept of his winemaking: village and single vineyard wines.
Viñedos en Labastida is their second village wine, where Tempranillo is still the main variety (85%) but it is complemented with 10% of Garnacha and another 5% of white varieties, such as Viura and Palomino. The grapes come from 2 plots between 45 and 80 years old.
Most of the grapes are destemmed, although 25% of whole bunches are used during fermentation for greater freshness. Fermented in stainless steel tanks, the wine rests for 10 months in concrete tanks and used 500-litre French oak barrels stored in a cellar on the hillside of San Vicente de la Sonsierra.
This red has notes of darker fruit, along with herbal notes and polished tannins. Easy to drink now or within 5-10 years if cellared correctly.
Of this vintage, 3,600 numbered bottles were produced.
