José Gil, together with his partner Vicky Fernández, started the Jose Gil Vigneron project in 2016, but despite his youth, he has a long career as a winemaker both in a family winery in La Rioja and staging in Germany and Burgundy, which is the origin of the concept of his winemaking: village and single vineyard wines.
Paraje la Canoca is a wine that comes from a vineyard of the same name, with a surface area of just 0.4 hectares, some 550 metres above sea level, although in this vintage some adjacent plots were included, which is why the creators call it ‘paraje’ or "unique area vineyard". Tempranillo is the main variety (95%) with a small contribution of white grapes (5% Viura), all from old vines, about 50 years old.
For this wine all the grapes are destemmed and after gentle pressing fermented with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel tanks. The wine then rests for 10 months in used 500-litre French oak barrels, which are kept in a cellar in the hills of San Vicente de la Sonsierra.
This red wine has notes of dark forest fruits, is herbaceous and fresh, with velvety tannins. Easy to drink now or within 5-10 years if cellared correctly.
Of this vintage, 3,300 numbered bottles were produced.
