Carmelo Peña started his personal project Bien de Altura in 2017 with the idea of recovering old vines planted in the mountains of Gran Canaria. As the name suggests - Bien de Altura - the vineyards are between 1,100 and 1,460 metres above sea level. They are located in the northern part of the island and have the traditional way of planting different varieties mixed in each plot to mitigate possible problems, but which today confer a special charisma to all the wines
Ikewen which means ‘Origin’ is Carmelo's first wine on his native island. Made mainly from Listán Negro (85%) with the rest from Listán Prieto and white varieties. Vines are more than 90 years old, from volcanic soils, coming from different plots between 1.200 and 1.450 m of altitude.
It is the reference with the highest production with 17.000 bottles in this vintage and with a slightly more daring style. As in all the labels, all the grape varieties are fermented with whole bunches (100% stems), a prolonged maceration of about 35 days, but inside stainless steel tanks, with a subsequent ageing in the same for a year (only 15% of the wine is refined in barrels).
