In Vega de Ribes they have been cultivating the vineyards for decades in an artisanal and ecological way, given its location in the vicinity of the Garraf natural park, between the Mediterranean Sea and the Mazic. Malvasía de Sitges is a white grape variety, according to ancient legend, brought from the eastern Mediterranean (near present-day Greece) in the 14th century, and since then cultivated in the Catalan coastal area. It is different from the Malvasia "without a surname", it is more aromatic, ripens later and retains more natural acidity, which offers the winemaker a wide range of possibilities, starting with a basic white wine, more complex with aging, sparkling or even sweet wine, so popular and recognized in Sitges. More than 30 years ago Vega de Ribes grafted on old vines this variety, which was not very widespread at that time. Modern DNA investigation revealed that Malvasía de Sitges actually comes from Italy and it is the same as Malvasia di Lipari (north of Sicily), and also found in the Canary Islands under the name of Malvasía Aromática. Saserra 2019 is a 100% Malvasia from Sitges, due to a rather cool and rainy vintage the wine is also very fresh with hints of exotic fruit. Unlike recent vintages, in this wine we can find notes of dried fruits that show its slightly oxidative character, enhancing its complexity. The grapes are slowly pressed and the must ferments in steel tanks, with subsequent aging on the lees and finally a few years of bottle ageing in the winery. About 4,000 bottles are produced each year in an artisanal and natural way with a minimum addition of sulfur dioxide (less than 10 mg/l). Truly amazing!
