Llanos Negros brings us this high-altitude Atlantic red, as the vineyard (specifically the El Rayo plot) is located in the La Traviesa area near Puntagorda, at 1450 meters above sea level. The vines are more than 80 years old and are planted, like almost all Canary Island vineyards, in volcanic soils (although in this area there is also some clay).
The listan prieto variety should not be confused with listan negro, as they are not even close varieties. This historic variety, also called black muscatel in other parts of the Canary Islands, was chosen by the Franciscan friars for the plantations at the time of the colonization of the Americas. In the U.S. it is known as “Mission Grape”, in Chile as Uva País, in Argentina as the Criolla grape and many other names.
This 2018 Mission’s Grapes is a very fine, light and fragrant wine.
